Centrecom salesman..

30 September 2006 Tags  ,

I went into Centrecom, to take a look at the Asus F3J- chassis.

Nobody seems to have the specific model I want (F3Jp), so I chose to take a look at the F3Jv that Centrecom did have in stock.

When I first got there, a couple was looking at the Asus range in the display cabinet (A6JA, and F3Jm).
Eventually, they left, and the salesman started to work on me.

He did several things wrong, his first was assuming I didn't know what I was talking about.

I was told I could have it for the bargin price of $2600, which was $99 cheaper than what they were selling it in the store for - their webprice is $2,553.10.
"$100 savings, and I'll throw in a free 512mb stick - how can you say no?"
"Simply", I thought, "its a) not the model I wanted, and b) not a good price anyway"

The next thing he did was lookup the screen resolution for me (the unit wasn't plugged in/turned on). Centrecom's page on this model is terrible, it has WSXGA and WXGA in different spots.
On the laptop, it had a sticker advertising WSXGA+, which is 1680×1050.
After discussing it, it turns out its actually WXGA, or 1280×800, but mr salesman assured me they were the same anyway.

Good thing I know my acronyms.

The last thing he did wrong was telling me the F3Jv is North American only, whereas another guy said behind him the F3Jm's aren't out yet (even though I was looking at one)

Good news is, I liked the F3J- layout, I'll just 'preorder' the F3JP for $1895 + $19.80 P&H.
I won't get it in-store, they had it down for just over $2000 ($2050? something like that) Edit: They have it advertised in store for $2079, which is $163.90 more (including P&H). Oh and that free 512mb USB stick? All notebooks at Centrecom (at least in store) have that this week.

Vista RC1/5728 Review

For those in the dark, Windows Vista is Microsoft's next operating system, touted as 'The Next Big Thing ™'.
So whats new/improved over Windows XP you ask?

  • Security - Updates to the Security Control Center include User Account Control (UAC), Windows Defender (Malware) and the Windows Firewall
  • Search and organisation - without a doubt, the new search is one of the 'big' things in Vista. Its faster, its more successful, its more intergrated…its just better
  • Internet Explorer 7 - not Vista exclusive, but will ship with Vista
  • Sidebar/Gadgets - Similar to Apple OS X's dashboard/widget system, possibly one of the worst features of Vista
  • Performance - ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive are set to take advantage of USB memory to 'upgrade' your computer
  • Visuals - Aero is the new desktop rendering system (more on it below)
  • Direct X 10 - Vista only, offers some neat visuals, but no hardware/games are out for it yet

..and thats just the beginning

Zazz madness

30 September 2006 Tags  ,

I love USB, its a fantastic bus.
I have 11 USB ports in total on my computer.
I have 4 USB devices.

Zazz, however, seem to think that everybody has 500 USB ports, as it seems every couple of days, they have a new (and even more pointless than the last) USB device on sale.
Let me count it up, yesterday, USB battery charger, day before, 400gb HDD…with the option to get a USB enclosure for it, before that, it was a Webcam (USB) package, and before that - a Mystery Miniature…USB mouse.
Lets not forget the USB graphics tablet, mug warmer, tv tuners, card readers…

For those who don't know, Zazz 'bulk sell' one product a day - usually for a good price.

Today's Zazz is a USB Hub and Pen holder, With Audio AND PS/2!

Great, another 4 USB ports, and audio jacks? Who doesn't have a computer with Audio Jacks on the front/side/top?
PS/2? Why go with PS/2 when you have so many USB ports!
Don't worry, its only $18 + $4.70 P&H.

Due to an error, they sent out emails about upcoming items by mistake.
Tomorrow's Zazz (I'm guessing) is a 7 port Powered USB Hub. Fan-freaking-tastic.

In all seriousness, I love the idea of zazz, and i've even bought two items from them…but they have so much junk.

Update #2: Launching Firefox as administrator, or disabling UAC, will fix this problem.

Update: Turns out you can at least change the Start Menu entry, if you Right Click on the Start Menu, Customize > Change 'Show on Start Menu' Internet Link to Firefox (or Opera, or whatever is installed). That doesn't effect whats your default browser, but its interesting none-the-less

..gets moosey vengence upon his head. Will's gone and stolen my blog entry idea.I'll throw in another picture, again, this is from the 'Default Programs' accessible via Control Panel or the Start Menu.Vista Vs Firefox (and others)
IE7 will not let up its hold on HTTP/HTTPS/FTP.5600 let me use firefox as my default browser (I didn't check those dialogs however), but since installing 5728 s'morning, I've had IE7 popup over and over. Will suggested that its intended behaviour - I'd lean towards bug, since 5600 was 'okay' for me.
At least Thunderbird took control successfully.

I'll benchPress your Words

So I’ve installed WordPress, and I must say, I’m impressed.

The install was a breeze, it uses AJAX for a lot of its options (and as most of you know, I think AJAX is a cool thing), its interface is pretty.

I’ll make my own theme eventually - probably when I move this domain over to dreamhost (its complicated why I haven’t..) or whenever I get bored.

All these things to drag around…

WordPress is how blogging software should be - easy, yet powerful. It’ll encourage me to, gasp, actually blog semi regularly.
